That piece is intriguing (and nice to see Paul Watson link to it too) - in some ways that collaborative underground has always been a massive thing, but at the same time it's always good to have new metaphors to reinforce its existence. Maybe mainstream culture has always undergone this constant rebirth of narrative - from "Web 2.0" to more branded versions (TikTokkers, for example). I wonder if it's "easier" to tackle Zika because it's a "known" system and to "eradicate" it is a much simpler argument of "spray X until it's gone".

Modern approaches to problem solving seem to thrive on this distinction - easy, direct problems get solved quickly, while nobody knows what to do about "extreme phenomena" to borrow Baudrillard's term - or perhaps just organic networks. (Ironically we do seem good at *creating* new organic systems, such as the internet though?)
Scribehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08757616056135886893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5633495.post-19577542508127319862016-09-12T15:20:40.907+01:002016-09-12T15:20:40.907+01:00Fun fact. But for me, it was just like a heavy flu ...with a lot of itching at the end. And 30% of people who have it don't seem to have symptoms at all.

We should beware of hype here. Yes, it's a terrible thing for a mother to have a child disabled by the disease. But like all risks, it does have to be weighed up against all the others. And the costs and benefits of addressing them considered rationally, not driven by panic.
Composinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01739889615635395138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5633495.post-53049209307242529552013-08-09T08:06:33.560+01:002013-08-09T08:06:33.560+01:00Happy birthday mate ! Redundancy is a ...Hi Phil, meant to reply sooner... Redundancy is a really interesting topic. I remember back in floppy disc days, the suggested advice was to take backups of your software, and then use the backups, not the originals. Of course, this assumes that there is a _value_ difference between the paths you can take - i.e. not all redundancy paths are equal. Sometimes maybe they are.

In my case, there is an 'inherent' resilience in that none of the modules _specifically_ depend on the others - they're used because they're there, but I'm already thinking about extending the code to take in other fragments of text, for example. Similarly, it'd be annoying if leanpub went away, but I suspect there are other ways of turning Markdown into PDFs, for instance.

So there's a difference between "replacable" modules - i.e. simulacra you can "drop in" if the main one goes down - and modules that change the output, but achieve basically the same thing - a flexible redundancy.

I have this suspicion other people have already mapped all this out. Time to get the reading lists geared up again...
Scribehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08757616056135886893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5633495.post-66038282731549974192013-07-04T09:09:56.329+01:002013-07-04T09:09:56.329+01:00Great post.

I'd claim there is not just a greater sense of community, but also of chaos, to areas like the North Laine, which frees the self up to experience the unexpected, rather than expect the familiar.

In other words, it feels like they run on different rules - experimentation is more important than survival. Enjoyment is more important than profit. That's not to say businesses expect to fail - most great ones don't, but freed of the idea that shops are merely the foot-soldier of the retail chain, independent outlets encapsulate the coming together of decision and effect: the person you're dealing with often has the power to change how the shop behaves - to give you a discount, to recommend something special, or to dig something out of the back. That's a massive effect on the "consumer".

So I feel empowered by the North Laine in the same way that I feel empowered by haggling, or at an unconference, or at a festival. The rules are bendable when you're face to face with the people with the power to make decisions, and that's a paradigm that clone stores miss out on - collaboration in the retail experience.Scribehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08757616056135886893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5633495.post-74408784039119786962012-08-08T22:03:31.043+01:002012-08-08T22:03:31.043+01:00You feel empowered walking through the North Laine...You feel empowered walking through the North Laine?Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10916957174208127452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5633495.post-26500310067782046622012-05-04T18:02:25.557+01:002012-05-04T18:02:25.557+01:00I've just (belatedly) read the advance copy, a...I've just (belatedly) read the advance copy, and loved it.
